| Finding
and Hiring an Inspector |
So
where do you find these inspectors and what do you need
to know when hiring an inspector?
Inspectors come in all shapes and sizes. Some are good
and some are not so good. Some people feel qualified if
they are in the construction industry. It is probably
not a good idea to get Uncle Jim who was in the building
trade some years ago to do this. You need someone who
is trained to look at all the systems in a home as well
as the structure. Examples of systems are the plumbing
system or electrical system. Remember, that inspectors
are generalists and may recommend a specialist look over
something in more detail. It is really up to you to choose
a reputable firm with reputable inspectors. Your agent,
friends or work colleagues may have recommendations. Even
your attorney or lender may know some. Word of mouth referrals
can often be the most reliable.
The American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI)
is a good resource. You can get a referral for an inspector
who is affiliated with ASHI from them. ASHI inspectors
have completed a minimum number of inspections and training
courses in order to be affiliated with the ASHI. Visit
them at: www.ASHI.com.
Inspectors affiliated with ASHI are also required to do
yearly training. It is just as important to get a good
inspector as having the inspection done itself. Here are
eight key questions it is advisable to ask an inspector
before hiring him:
